9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; (Philippians 3:9-10 KJV)
Our own self-righteousness is of the law, and although it is important in relating to the world and other people, it is useless in relating to God. We can only relate to Him by His righteousness that we receive by faith in Jesus, which gives us the faith OF Jesus, so we can relate to the most Holy God. Our self-righteousness is like filthy rags in the sight of God (Isaiah 64:6).
When Paul wrote that “I may know him”, the word know means much more than just knowing about someone. We do not have an English word that imparts the true meaning, as he is talking about a truly intimate knowledge. The Greek word used for know is “GINOSKO” and is the word used in Genesis (Genesis 4:1) where Adam knew his wife Eve and she bore a son, so it is referring to the most intimate type of knowledge, and not the way we normally think of the word “know”. Also, as we understand the power of the resurrection of Jesus, and suffer for our beliefs, we become more like Jesus, and are assured of our own salvation and resurrection, as long as we continue to obey Him (Hebrews 5:9). Study the Word of God, and really get to know Him, and you will become like Him. Praise God for His Word.
